Steven Sasson First Inventor of Digital Camera

Steven J. Sasson is a figure that cannot be separated from the history of the development of digital cameras. Steven J. Sasson was born July 4, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York. He was recorded as the inventor of the first digital camera. He also had graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in electrical engineering.

Discovery of Digital Cameras

In 1975, Steven J. Sasson succeeded in creating the digital camera and his findings were recorded in the history as the inventor of the first digital camera technology. Although in 1972, Texas Instruments Inc. had designed an electronic camera that does not require film. However, the electronic camera created by Texas Instruments Inc. was not a digital camera. Initially, Sasson got the assignment from his supervisor at Eastman Kodak Company, Gareth A Lloyd to create an electronic camera using a charger or Charger Coupled Device (CCD).

Sasson's search using the CCD system did not work. Then, he was turning his attention to existing materials at that time such as analog to digital converters, Kodak lens camera, and mini-size CCD chips. From the materials which were available and selected by Sasson, he made a new digital circuit. The new digital circuit was built using guidance from oscilloscope measurements. From the digital circuit, then he created a prototype digital camera. The process of making the digital camera lasted until December 1975.

In December 1975, Sasson and his chief technician persuaded the laboratory assistant to pose for them. The black and white image captured at a resolution of 0.01 megapixels took 23 seconds to record to a digital cassette and another 23 seconds to read from the playback unit to the television. Then, it showed up on the screen. Since then, Sasson had continued to develop his inventions. Sasson is now working to protect the intellectual property of his company, Eastman Kodak Company. On November 17, 2010, the US President Barack Obama gave Sasson a medal "National Medal of Technology and Innovation" at a ceremony in the East Room of the White House.
