When he was studying at Broadalbin Central School in Broadalbin New York, he began to love the world of technology, especially computers. He learned a lot about networking and programming which basically related to the internet. Due to his ability and passion for computer, technology, and internet, Ray Tom continued his education at a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute University.

History of Email Discovery

After Ray Tom graduated and earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute University in 1963, he continued to get a master's degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1967, Ray Tomlinson later joined the company called BBN Technologies. In this company, the ARPANET network protocol and the implementation of Telnet were developed by Ray Tomlinson. He also wrote a program called SNDMSG which was the forerunner of the email.

SNDMSG was an application that capable of sending messages to others through a network which was refined in 1971. There was one important problem that faced by Ray Tomlinson, it was how to order Email distinguished messages which were directed out of the network and other messages could be addressed to other computer users. Ray Tomlinson then studied the keyboard and then interested in the @ symbol on the keyboard as a hint address of an email user.

The first email message that was sent reads “QWERTYUIOP”. This was the most historic message sent via the ARPANET network which became the Internet network. In 2000, Ray Tom earned an award, George R. Stibitz Computer Pioneer Award. Then in 2001, he also received an award named International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Ten years later, Ray Tom also received an award named Top 150 innovators and ideas from MIT. One year later Ray Tom was awarded the Internet Hall of Fame of the Internet Society. Because of her email invention, Ray Tom was on the list of the 50 most influential people in the world of informatics.
