The Discovery and History of Motorcycles
At first, an American man named Sylvester Howard Roper found a two-cylinder engine using steam power and installed it on the bike. His discovery was considered as the emergence of a bicycle that first used the machine in the world. He also invented a steam the engine car but Roper died when he rode his first steam-powered motorcycle.
In another place in France, a man named Ernest Michaux tried to install a steam engine on his bicycle. The machine was made by his father who worked as a blacksmith. The machine was fueled by alcohol and used a twin drive belt to drive the front wheel of the bike. A few years later in 1881, an American Lucius Copeland made a smaller boiler and stuck to his bicycle. This steam boiler moved the rear wheel of the bike. The speed produced on his bicycle was incredible and reached about 19 kilometers per hour. Finally, in 1887, Copeland created a manufacturing company that built a motorcycle.
The World's First Gasoline Motorcycles
After next 10 years, the motorcycle discovery by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach from Germany were widely recognized as the world's first Motorcycle. The motorcycles used a gasoline internal combustion engine that was created in 1885 and called as Petroleum Reitwagon. Then, Daimler has recognized the world as the inventor of a motorcycle. Daimler's motorcycle used Nicolaus Otto's engine that was known as 4 stroke engine in 1876.
Previously, Wilhelm Maybach attached the engine and carburetor on the Daimler bike then became a Motorcycle. Uniquely, Daimler and Maybach motorcycles had a pair of wheels in the middle like a safety wheel and kept the bike upright apart from two wheels in front and back. Gottlieb Daimelr was also a pioneer of making a commercial car arena and engines for ships with gasoline. His company name was Daimler-Benz, a leading automotive company later developed into a Mercedes-Benz that we know today.
Since then, many companies that introduced Motorcycles which was widely known in Germany then to England and spread rapidly to America. The Hildebrand & Wolf Muller Company became the first company that built a factory for the production of a motorcycle. In America, the company name Charles Metz first built a factory to producing motorcycles in the Waltham, Massachusetts region.
The Development of Motorcycles in America
In America, there are many motorcycle designers but one of the most famous pioneers were William Harley, Artur, and Walter Davidson sisters who later founded an automotive company known as Harley-Davidson. William Harley with the Davidson brothers founded the company Harley-Davidson Motor Company in 1903. The motorcycles which were made by them had a good quality machine.
